Grammar Singular/Plural Possessive The possessive case of a noun or pronoun shows ownership or relationship. EX: She is a teacher in Maria’s school.- Ownership EX: Larry’s friend uses a wheelchair.- Relationship Rule 1 To form the possessive case of a singular noun add an apostrophe and an s. EX: The mayor’s desk was a mess.
3
Grammar Rule 2 To form the possessive case of a plural noun ending in s, add only the apostrophe. EX: Two players left their gym suits in the locker room. (simple plural) this is correct. EX: Two players’ gym suits were left in the locker room. (The apostrophe shows that the gym suits belong to the two players.) A proper name ending in s may add only an apostrophe if the name has two or more syllables and if the addition of s after the apostrophe would make the name awkward to pronounce. EXS: Achilles’ armor City of Taos’ mayor Many proper names and common nouns ending in s add the apostrophe and s if the added s is pronounced as a separate syllable. EXS: Chris’s locker Bus’s
