4 Objective Today, we will be learning about the spread of Greek culture.

5 Greek Culture Spreads

6 Alexandria:  *B/c the center for learning  *Had a library w/500,000 scrolls  *Researchers flocked Hellenistic kingdoms had to be built or rebuilt. Architects built baths, theaters, & temples along the streets.

7 *Hellenistic kings & wealthy citizens paid handsomely for statues & temples. Money was also spent to support literature. Appolonius of Rhodes wrote Argonautica.

8 Greek Culture Spreads Argonautica:  *Jason & band of heroes  *Search for ram w/ golden fleece. Theocritus  *Wrote short poems about the beauty of nature

10 Epicureanism:  *Founded by Epicurus  *Happiness was the goal of life  *To be happy seek pleasure  *Pleasure = friends & not worrying  *Thus no politics

11 Philosophy Stoicism  *Developed by Zeno  *Taught at the “painted porch”  *Happiness from reason & doing your duty, not emotions  *Stoic today = not affected by joy or grief

13 *Astronomers study stars, planets, and other heavenly bodies. Aristarchus:  *An astronomer  *Believed that the sun was at the center of the universe & the Earth circle it Others rejected this idea

14 Greek Science and Math Eratosthenes:  *In charge of the library of Alexandria  *Earth is round  *Measured the diameter of the Earth  *Shadows

15 Greek Science and Math Euclid  *Most famous Greek mathematician  *Elements & plane geometry  *The branch of math that shows how points, lines, angles, & surfaces relate to one another

16 Greek Science and Math Archimedes  *Most famous scientist of Hellenistic Era  *Solid geometry – the study of spheres & cylinders  *Value of pi  *Catapults
