1 SWAN November Committee of the Whole Meeting Presented by Aaron Skog, SWAN Executive Director November 11, 2015

2 Relevancy Issues with Returned Search Results Search Training for Public Services Library Staff Reorganize Catalog Items for Better Facets & Format Icons Listening Tour Patron Usability Study Membership Questionnaire/Feedback Survey

3  Search Result Relevancy  We have identified examples of the search problems  We have attacked the problems within our Enterprise test environment  We are not alone

4  Enterprise Test Instance  MARC maps revised  Label changes completed based on survey feedback  Upgraded from Enterprise 4.3 to version 4.5  Web Services upgraded to version “2015.10”  Connected to clone of Symphony production made on October 22  Enterprise Production/Live System  Web Services upgrade coming soon  Upgrade to 4.5 scheduled for Wed Nov. 18 overnight

5  Search results are not sorted intuitively  Editions with a 245 |b are ranked lower than editions without a 245 |b. Results that seem less relevant (Pretty Gone Girl, Good Girl Gone Bad) appear before some Gone Girl editions  This is consistent with other popular titles in a variety of formats including the following:  by Lee Child  by Erik Larsen  by Lev Grossman

6  Focus of our work  Book titles with the most copies available should not be buried within a search  Goal is to expose these on first page of results  Multiple formats of a title should have some logical grouping

7 CURRENT PROBLEMATIC SEARCHES  Dead wake  Book was appearing around #14 on page 2 of a search result list  Wild: From lost to found on the Pacific Crest Trail  Patron searches for wild  Example of a “245 subfield a” problematic search CHANGES IN TEST ENTERPRISE  MARC mapping adjustments  Enterprise 4.5 relevancy score using publication date  How did it improve? (let’s review)

31  The first dropdown box in the Enterprise search bar is the Search Target Box. This defines which collection is being searched or if any search limits are applied. We can relabel these options for the consortium to help make them clearer. They are currently labeled:  Everything - searches all SWAN libraries as well as the profile library's eResource Central collections (if applicable)  Library Search* - searches all SWAN libraries, without eResource Central  Digital Catalog* - Only searches the profile library's eResource Central collections  *These options will not appear if the profile library does not have an eResource Central collection*

36  Summary  Add “Exact Title” and change “Title to Title Keyword” [Note: Exact title can’t work at this time. Maybe some additional development or consulting from SirsiDynix can make it happen, but it won’t be implemented by December quarterly.]  Continue searching enhanced contents  No change to Author, Series Title  Keep "Subject" and "Keyword in Subject Headings“  Expand to include other standard numbers

40 Based on customer feedback, SirsiDynix has added a new facet for eResource Central materials. This facet allows users to narrow their search according to vendor. With this new facet, there are three facets available for use with eResource Central: Vendor: Includes options like OverDrive, Baker and Taylor, 3M, and Recorded Books. Electronic Format: Includes options like epub, Kindle, html, etc. eReader: Includes options like Kindle, Kobo, Nook, etc. We can display all three facets, or just one or two.
