3 Use your notes to answer the following questions: What is an indulgence? Why did Martin Luther post his 95 Theses? How did the printing press influence the Reformation? What was nepotism? 10  Prior to the Reformation all Christians were Roman Catholic  The [REFORM]ation was an attempt to REFORM (change) the Catholic Church  People like Martin Luther wanted to get rid of the corruption and restore the people’s faith in the church

13  Lived from 1483-1546 in Germany  Father encouraged him to study law  Believed in nepotism (giving jobs to family members instead of more qualified workers)

14  He became troubled over the possibility of not going to heaven  He turned to the Bible, and confession for comfort  In the Bible he found the answer he was looking for

15 “The righteous shall by his faith.” Luther realized that only faith (in the ultimate goodness of Jesus), not good deeds, could save a person. No good works, rituals, etc. would save a person if they did not believe.

19  The Diet of Worms  1520 Pope Leo X order Luther to give up his beliefs  Luther burned the order and was excommunicated  Luther went into hiding where he translated the New Testament into German – spreading his beliefs even further

20  Anti-Catholic  Influenced by Martin Luther  Disagreed with Luther’s “Salvation through faith alone.”  In Calvinist communities, the Protestant church was governed by a small group of laymen called presbyters  Spread Protestantism to Scotland

25 Write a PERSUASIVE invitation to former Catholics to rejoin the Catholic faith after the Counter-Reformation (can be an advertisement, flyer, or letter and should be at least ½ page if a letter) Include: 1.Acknowledgment of what needed changing 2.Acknowledge what was changed 3.Why they should come back OR Pretend you are a supporter of Martin Luther. Write a letter to the Pope explaining how you feel about the Catholic church. Make sure you reference specific reasons from class that people were angry and frustrated with the Pope and church.
