Confidential 1 Fractions & Percent Grade 6

Confidential2 1) Write the equivalent percent of 0.23 2) Convert 87% to decimal 3) Write the fraction of 150% 4) Convert fraction to percent: ¾ 5) During the X’mas sale a book shop reduced the prices of its cartoon books from $1200 to $800.By what percent was the price decreased? Warm up

Confidential3 Convert from Percent to Decimal: To convert a percent to decimal, divide by 100. It means moving the decimal point two places to the left. Example : 56% 56% = = 0.56 56% is equivalent to the decimal 0.56. 56 100 Lets review what we have learned in the last lesson

Confidential4 Convert from Decimal to Percent To convert a decimal to a percent, multiply by 100. It means moving the decimal point two places to the right. Example: 0.34 0.34 x 100 = 34 % 0.34 is equivalent to 34%

Confidential5 Percent increase or decrease To find percent increase or decrease, use the formula = % increase or decrease Amount of increase or decrease Original amount

Confidential6 Let us start! What is a Fraction? A fraction is a number that expresses part of a whole. Fractions are written in the form or a/b, where a and b are whole numbers, and the number b is not equal to 0. The number a is called the numerator, and the number b is called the denominator.

Confidential7 ½, ¾, 4/5 The fraction 5/6 represents the shaded region of the square below. There are six equal parts in square and only five parts are shaded. Example of fractions

Confidential8 Percent What is a percent? The word percent comes from the Latin phrase per centum, which means per hundred. A percent is a ratio whose second term is 100. Percent means parts per hundred. we use the symbol % for percent. Example: 60 %, 75 %, 90 %

Confidential9 Converting fractions to percent For converting fractions to percent follow the following steps: Divide the numerator of the fraction by its denominator Multiply the result by 100 (for that move the decimal point two places to the right) Put the % sign at the end of the result

Confidential10 Example Convert the fraction ¾ to percent. ¾ = 0.75 (Divide 3 by 4) Now multiply 0.75 by 100, we will get 0.75 x 100 = 75 So, ¾ = 75% Divide 3 by 4 and Multiply by 100. Put % at the end.

Confidential11 Example Convert the fraction 7/8 to percent. 7/8 = 0.875 (Divide 7 by 8) Now multiply 0.875 by 100, we will get 0.875 x 100 = 87.5 So, 7/8 = 87.5% Divide 7 by 8 and Multiply by 100. Put % at the end.

Confidential12 Converting percent to fraction For converting percent to fractions follow the following steps: First remove the Percent sign Make a fraction with the percent as the numerator and 100 as the denominator Reduce/simplify the fraction

Confidential13 Example Convert the 60 % to fraction. 60 (Remove the % sign) Now divide 60 by 100 and then simplify, we will get 60/ 100 = 3/5 So, 60 % = 3/5 Remove % sign and divide by 100.

Confidential14 Example Convert the 85 % to fraction. 85 (Remove the % sign) Now divide 60 by 100 and then simplify, we will get 85/ 100 = 17/20 So, 85 % = 17/20 Remove % sign and divide by 100.

Confidential 15 Let’s take a break!

Confidential20 Q2. The graph below shows the collection of Ted’s videos. a) How many percent of total comedy videos he has? b) How many percent of drama and action videos he has?

Confidential21 Q3. Order each set from least to greatest. 5 %, 1/4, 32%, 1/8

Confidential22 Let Us Review Fractions are written in the form a/b, where b is not 0 The number a is called the numerator, and the number b is called the denominator Percent means parts per hundred we use the symbol % for percent.

Confidential23 Let Us Review For converting fractions to percent Divide the numerator of the fraction by its denominator. Multiply the result by 100 and p ut the % sign. For converting percent to fractions First remove the Percent sign. Make a fraction with the percent as the numerator and 100 as the denominator and then simplify the fraction.

Confidential 24 Great Job today! Remember to do the worksheets!!!
