Safe Handling When you are lifting or moving heavy or awkward loads you should make sure that you follow the correct procedures to ensure that you do not cause any injuries

When lifting heavy items you should: Stand close to the load and spread your feet Bend your knees and keep your back straight Grip the load firmly Lift the load by straightening your legs Hold the load close to the centre of your body From www.citybin.com/Handling_Basics.pdf Lifting Loads

Loading Items When loading items on a trolley to move them, you should ensure that they are safely loaded and without danger of falling off. You should also be able to see over the load.

There are 4 main pieces of equipment which can be used to lift equipment and vehicles. On the next few pages you will see some equipment and you will need to choose the correct name for each. Each time you get the answer correct the car will lift on the ramp. If you get it wrong you can try again! Lifting equipment

When working under a hoist or ramp, there are a few precautions you should take to ensure you are safe. No one should work above the mechanic The vehicle should be central on the hoist The car must be secure and the wheel chocked The area should be free from equipment

Safety with other equipment Compressed air: This can be very dangerous. Ensure that the quick release couplings are engaged before use. When working with compressed air you should never direct it onto any part of your body, use ot blow away any dirt or dust. Hand tools: You will often use tools such as spanners, screwdrivers, hammers and chisels. Incorrect use of these tools can occur in cuts and minor injuries. Rotating machinery: All rotating machinery, such as sandstones and wheel balancers, should have guards fitted and used.
