Lesson Menu Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 12–4) Main Idea and Vocabulary Example 1:Number Line Example 2:Opposites Example 3:Opposites
3
Main Idea/Vocabulary I will use integers to represent real-life situations and graph them on a number line. positive number negative number integer negative integers positive integers opposite integers
4
Example 1 Number Line Mark earned $6 by cutting a lawn. He spent $6 downloading some music. Use integers to represent these situations. Then graph the integers on a number line. Mark earned $6: + 6 or 6Mark spent $6: –6.

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 1 A.+10, +10 B.–10, –10 C.–10, +10 D.0, 0 Thursday the temperature was 10 degrees below zero. Friday the temperature was 10 degrees above zero. Which show the integers that represent these situations?
6
Example 2 Opposites The Grand Canyon is about 1,600 meters deep. Write an integer to represent this situation. Then write its opposite. 1,600 meters deep: –1,600 Answer: So, –1,600 represents this situation. The integer +1,600 or 1,600 is its opposite. The opposite of –1,600 is +1,600 or 1,600.

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 2 A.7 m deep: +7; opposite: –7 B.7 m deep: –7; opposite: +7 C.7 m deep: +0; opposite: –0 D.7 m deep: +3; opposite: –3 The pool in the back yard is 7 meters deep. Which integer represents this situation? What is its opposite?

Example 3 Opposites Kavita wrote a check for $48 to pay for some new sneakers. Write an integer to represent this situation. Then write its opposite. wrote a check for $48: –48 Answer: So, –48 represents this situation. The integer +48 or 48 is its opposite. The opposite of –48 is +48 or 48. It represents paying $48 for the sneakers.
