What is Fitness? O Fitness is the ability to meet the demands of the environment

Healthy Active Lifestyle O What does healthy active living mean? O Being physically active everyday and eating a well balanced diet O What factors contribute to a healthy active lifestyle?

Healthy Active Lifestyle O Currently, about 30% of Canadian children are overweight or obese…why? O Lack of exercise both in school and out O Poor diet choices O Obesity is difficult to reverse, particularly as adults, so what can you do as teenagers to prevent this trend?

Health Related Fitness O What are some characteristics of a “healthy” or “fit” person O Cardiovascular fitness O Muscular strength O Muscular endurance O Flexibility O Body composition (low fat %, high muscle %)

Muscular Strength O Amount of force or tension a muscle or group of muscles can exert in one maximal effort O Eg. Grip test, bench press

Muscular Endurance O Ability of a muscle group to perform repeated contractions for an extended period of time or to maintain a contraction for an extended period of time O Eg. Push-ups, sit-ups, bar hang

Flexibility O The range of motion in a particular joint or how much movement you have at a particular joint O Eg. Sit and reach

Cardiorespiratory Fitness O Ability to continue in strenuous activity tasks involving large muscle groups for long periods of time O A measure of how efficient your lungs are at supplying oxygen to your muscles O Eg. Mile run MOST IMPORTANT COMPONENT RELATED TO HEALTH!

Body Composition O A measure of how much body weight is composed of fat (% body fat, BMI, etc.) O % body fat – preferred index used to evaluate a person’s body composition O Boys 10-20% normal O Girls 15-25% normal

How do these components relate to Fitness Testing? O Each component of our fitness testing (and sports in general) requires different “strengths” that can be improved with consistent activity or specific exercises geared to that “strength”

Goal Setting O For your response, you will only be looking at the first four fitness characteristics O Muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and cardiorespiratory fitness O When you are setting your goals to improve your results on the next fitness test, think about exercises that relate to the fitness components for that particular task
