A at the lecture about the film industry, Yu Peng is given a handout. Read the handout with him. What you see Not all films are made in ‘real’ places. When they are, they are shot on location, which means that real streets, trees and buildings are used. However, this can be difficult and expensive; so many films are made in buildings called sound stages. If this is the case, a backdrop (a view of the sky or a city street) may be carefully painted and hung behind the actors. Backdrops are so good that you often think you are looking at a real place.
10
There are also many important words that refer to the camera. When the entire screen is full with one image, like someone’s face, this is called a close-up shot. When the camera moves back and the screen shows a picture from far away, this is called a wide- angle shot. Wide-angle shots are used to show things such as mountains and a river or a city with many streets and buildings. At the end of a film, the credits appear. They include a list of people who worked on the film and the list of songs you heard in the film, as well as other things.
11
What you hear The music, which plays in the background while you watch a film, is called the film score. The sounds like raindrops, a doorbell or footsteps in a corridor are called sound effects. Sometimes, when a film is popular in many countries, people want to hear the dialogue in their own language. In this case, new actors are hired to read the dialogue and it is recorded over the original talking. This is called dubbing and people describe these kinds of films as ‘dubbed’.

Last week, I went to a lecture about films and learned many interesting things. At the beginning of the lecture, we learned about several different types of films. We saw part of a cartoon and part of a very scary (4) ____________ film. Then a famous director showed us part of his new (5) __________ film. The part we saw was a car chase on a busy street in the USA. It was very exciting. horror action
37
Then the director told us about how he made the film. The scene we saw used two different kinds of (6) ________. First, it felt like the camera was in the sky. I could see the city’s streets and buildings. This was a (7) _________ shot. Then, the camera went right to a car. He looked very scared! That was a (8) ________shot. I learned that while most of the film was actually made (9) _________ in the streets of Los Angeles, some of the scenes inside buildings were actually made on a (10) ___________. One of the big fight scenes was also filmed inside, using a (11) _________ that looked like a famous LA street. shots wide-angle close-up on location sound stage backdrop
38
The best thing I learned from the lecture is never to ignore the (12) _________ at the end of the film. Reading them can tell you a lot about where a film was made and who worked on it. credits
