The Politics of Representation Programme tutor: Lesley Scott The concept of representation is core to understanding post-modern theories of identity; namely, how we construct and project our sense of self & how we view, judge and understand others. Post-modernism asserts that the construction of identity is underpinned by a wider discourse, involving representation through image, text and language. The deconstruction of this discourse provided a key stimulus and socio-political role for artists and designers in the latter part of the 20 th century. This programme aims to explore theory and practice relating to these issues. for modern man everything that exists does so only in and through representation Craig Owens, 1990 Lectures: The image world – image, representation and construction of the ‘other’ The construction site – men, masculinity, power and patriarchy. Desperately seeking myself – interrogating femininity; women & self representation. Case studies: painting, photography, sculpture, fashion, performance and textile art

A Sense of Place Andrea Peach This programme will look at the idea of ‘place’ in both a cultural and philosophical context. It will investigate how we construct relationships with places, both real and imaginary, and the importance of place in locating our identity. We will look at the influence of land, nature and cultural geography on creative practice, as well as the idea of ‘non-places’ in our increasingly global society. We will draw on a wide range of disciplines and discourses to consider the meaning of place. Case studies will be taken from art, architecture, design and literature.
