Do you know how we can carry out an experiment successfully?

It’s interesting to do an experiment. But we’ve got a lot of things to do before an experiment. First, we should be clear the aim of the experiment, the apparatus we need and how we can carry it out (we call it “method”).We watch what’s happening and get the result. Lastly it is important to have a discussion on the result of the experiment. Don’t forget to write down the conclusion.

What is the correct order to describe a scientific experiment? aim method result conclusion

Passage A Read through passage A in three minutes. electrical adj. 用电的,与电有关的 electricity n. 电 equipment n. 设备,装备 react vi. (化学)反应 reaction n. 反应 oxide n. 氧化物 Steam n. 蒸汽, 水气

Passage A – 3. Fast Reading(2m) Read Passage A and choose the best title for it.  The Different Uses of Metals  The Reaction of Metals  The Reaction of Metals with Oxygen

Passage A – 4. Detailed Reading(4m) Qs: 1.What should we know when we use metals? 2.Which metal reacts most with water, potassium or iron? It is important to know how they react with different substances. Potassium reacts most with water.

Passage A – 4. Interview(4m) Work in groups of four. One is a reporter from a TV station. The others are scientists. The interview should include the following questions. 1.Which metals reacts the most with oxygen and water? 2.What happens when you heat calcium in oxygen? 3.Which meals reacts with steam? 4.Does iron have a slow or fast reaction with team? 5.Does copper react with water? Potassium. It burns to form an oxide. Magnesium, aluminium, zinc. Slow. No, it doesn’t.

Passage B – 1.Pre-reading (1m) Q: Can we put nails in wet air?

Passage B – 2.Prediction Put the words in the right place of the experiment report. An Experiment Report An Experiment Report 1. __________: 2. __________: 3. __________: (1) (1) (2) (2) (3) (3) 4. __________: 5. __________: An Experiment Report An Experiment Report 1. __________: 2. __________: 3. __________: (1) (1) (2) (2) (3) (3) 4. __________: 5. __________: conclusion method result aim apparatus Aim Apparatus Method Result Conclusion

Passage B – 3.Scanning(4m) Right or wrong. 1.Iron rusts easily in dry air. 2.To make sure there’s no air in the water, you have to boil the water for 3 minutes. 3.We don’t know whether iron rusts in ordinary water. F T F

Passage B – 4.Jigsaw reading(5m) One group reads one experiment report. Then fill in the form below. Aim Apparatus Method Iron in dry air: Iron in air-free water: Iron in ordinary water: Result Conclusion To find out if... iron nails test tubes oil tube holders iron nails test tubes oil tube holders cotton wool Bunsen burner cotton wool Bunsen burner After a week, rust ( not ) rust in

Passage B – 5. Using(3m) Complete the passage using what we’ve learnt in this lesson. In the first part of the experiment, the ____ is dry. It shows that iron ___________ in dry air. In the first part of the experiment, the ____ is dry. It shows that iron ___________ in dry air. In the second part, you must _____ the water to ______ _______ that there is no air in it. ________ some oil to the water can ______ the air out of it. It shows that _____ don’t rust in ____________ water. In the second part, you must _____ the water to ______ _______ that there is no air in it. ________ some oil to the water can ______ the air out of it. It shows that _____ don’t rust in ____________ water. In the third part, _______ the tube with water. It shows that they rust in _________ water. In the third part, _______ the tube with water. It shows that they rust in _________ water. air doesn’t rust boil make sure Adding keepnails air-free half-fill ordinary

Pre-reading – 3.Learning and sing(3m) Complete the passage with proper words. This is a _________ _________ done in a lab. This is a _________ _________ done in a lab. First, get all the ____________ ready on the desk, a container( 容器 ) with some cold water in it, some potassium( 钾 ) and a spoon. First, get all the ____________ ready on the desk, a container( 容器 ) with some cold water in it, some potassium( 钾 ) and a spoon. Secondly, ________ some potassium into the water. Then a strong light will be seen, and it lasts for a while. Secondly, ________ some potassium into the water. Then a strong light will be seen, and it lasts for a while. We can reach a __________ that potassium _______ with cold water. We can reach a __________ that potassium _______ with cold water. scientific experiment apparatuses pour conclusion reacts

Complete the sentences: 1.In the first part of the experiment, the _______ is dry, not wet. 2.It shows that iron____________ when the air is dry. air does not rust

3.In the second part of the experiment, you must_______ the water to make sure there is no ________ in it. 4.You add ________ to the water because this keeps _________out of it. boil air oil air

5.it shows that __________ does not rust in water that has no _______in it nail air

summary 1.We have known about some metals and their reactions with some certain substances. 2.We have learned what needs to be paid attention to for an experiment. 3.We have studied some words about apparatus in a lab 4.We finish passage B
