Definitions Indicator: a variable selected and defined to measure progress toward an objective Index: a group of indicators aggregated into a single value General indicator: related to the selected transport mode - used for assessment on macro level Process indicator: related to the whole transport process - used for assessment on micro level Specific indicator: related to a particular transport case - used for assessment on micro level

Indicators Collection of the process indicators Collection of the general and specific indicators - for road - for rail - for inland waterway transport - for port cargo handling First step: selection Ranking the indicators by its importance Marking of indicators that it is important from the logistical, economical, environmental and safety point of view Selection of the indicators to be included in the determination of STPI

Evaluation of the indicators some of them are exact, measured, calculated or estimated values, statistical data some are “quality” characteristics 2. All should be quantified on proper scales (1-3; 1-5; 1-10) The assessment is made for the various sets of indicators both on macro and micro level

Normalization a “4” on a scale with 10 divisions is 0.400 a “2” on a scale with 3 divisions is 0.667 we get the normalized value (NV) of the indicator 4. Weighting by the degree of importance by the complexity of the indicator (only on micro level)

Calculation of the performance index (PI) on macro level - by using the general indicators PI aspect = Σ n i=1 (wf i * NV i ) / Σ n i=1 wf i the result is PI log, PI eco, PI env, PI saf for the different modes and the STPI in general is: STPI general = (wf log * PI log + wf eco * PI eco + wf env * PI env + wf saf * PI saf ) (wf log + wf eco + wf env + wf saf )

Summary Advantages of the method: well-defined the future also can be modeled the sensibility of STPI can be checked easily “objective” general and task-specific assessment can be made - gives information for the transport policy makers - on a company level comparison between alternatives for transport from A to B can be made the sustainability can be assessed separetly by different aspects - hence the effects of the different aspects on STPI can be seen simple a short program for the calculation can be easily written
