Physics The Five Force Equation Presented by Denise Jenke
2
Newton’s Second Law of Motion F net = ma What does it mean? What do the symbols stand for? How does this relate to the Five Force Equation?
3
F net = net force F net = ma What does it mean? A net force causes a mass to accelerate
4
F net = ma What do the symbols stand for? F net = net force; the vector sum of all forces acting on an object (Newton-N) m = mass (kilogram-kg) a = acceleration; the rate of change of velocity (m/s 2 )
5
The Five Force Equation F net = F g + F n + F a + F f BUT…..what does it mean???? FgFg FnFn FfFf FaFa
6
F net = F g + F n + F a + F f F g = gravitational force Force due to the Earth’s gravity on the object Always down FgFg
7
F net = F g + F n + F a + F f F g = mg g = acceleration due to the Earth’s gravity (-9.8 m/s 2 ) FgFg
8
F net = F g + F n + F a + F f F n = normal force The force of the surface on the object Support force FnFn
9
F net = F g + F n + F a + F f Is normal force the action/reaction force of gravitational force? FnFn FgFg
10
F net = F g + F n + F a + F f F a = applied force Push or pull on an object Force applied to the object Force can be applied in any direction FaFa
11
F net = F g + F n + F a + F f F f = force of friction Force that opposes the motion of an object FfFf
12
F net = F g + F n + F a + F f Friction is caused by the rubbing of two surfaces Surfaces must be touching and must want to move FfFf
13
F net = F g + F n + F a + F f Types of Frictional Force: Static Friction Sliding Friction FfFf
14
Static Friction Frictional force between two object in contact that keep them stationary (relative to each other) It is the force that keeps objects from moving Force acts parallel to direction of motion Only exists if a force is being applied to one of the objects
15
Sliding Friction Frictional force between two objects in contact and in motion (relative to each other) It is the force that acts when objects are moving Force acts parallel to the direction of motion
16
The Five Force Equation F net = F g + F n + F a + F f BUT…..what does it mean???? FgFg FnFn FfFf FaFa
17
The Five Force Equation SO…. Which forces cause motion? Which forces cause acceleration? FgFg FnFn FfFf FaFa
18
The Five Force Equation Stay tuned for.. Using the Five Force Equation FgFg FnFn FfFf FaFa
