3. Pre-Write Brainstorm your ideas, free-write, get everything on paper. Choose a concept or an idea for your poem. List everything you know about the topic. List emotions or words that you associate with the topic. List any personal experiences you have had with the topic.

4. Organize Circle the ideas you want to express in your poem. Decide which ideas you will keep and which you will discard. Decide what genre of poetry you are going to use (Diamante, Haiku, Ballad, etc) Decide in what order you are going to present your ideas.

5. Write Write the first draft (that’s right…I said first draft) of your poem in the chosen format.

6. Edit Did you follow the rules of the genre you have chosen? Did you use imagery? Did you write similes, metaphors, personification, hyperboles or symbolism? Did you use sound devices: alliteration, assonance, consonance, onomatopoeia? Does your poem rhyme? Should it rhyme? Is there internal rhyme? Is there end rhyme? Check your spelling.

7. Revise Based on the edit checklist, make the necessary revisions to your poem. Make sure that your poem reads well. If you stumble over any words or lines, change them.

8. Share This is where you write the final copy so that you may share it with the rest of the world.

9. Let your imagination be your guide. You could be a great poet and not even know it! Ha! Ha! Ha!
