10.3 – Surface Areas of Prisms and Cylinders

Warm Up

10.3- Surface Areas of Prisms and Cylinders (p. 528) I. Defining a Prism A. Prism: a polyhedron with 2 congruent, parallel faces. 1.) Bases: the 2 congruent, parallel faces of the polyhedron 2.) Lateral faces: the other faces of the polyhedron 3.) Altitude: a perpendicular segment joining the planes of the bases 4.) Height: the length of an altitude

10.3- Surface Areas of Prisms and Cylinders (p. 528) B. Right prism: has rectangular lateral faces AND a lateral edge is an altitude C. Oblique prism: bases are not aligned directly above one another AND lateral faces may be parallelograms

II. Surface area of a prism a. Use a net

b. Lateral and Surface areas: Lateral Area: the sum of the areas of the lateral faces Formula Lateral Area = perimeter of the base × height Surface Area: the sum of the lateral area and the area of the two bases Formula Surface Area = Lateral Area + 2 × Area of a Base
