MISS LE Surface Area and Volumes
2
Surface Area Vocabulary 7MG 2.1 Students will find the surface area of three-dimensional figures. Bases of a prism: Two congruent and parallel faces of a prism Cube: A rectangular prism with all the edges and faces congruent Cylinder: A solid with congruent and parallel circular bases Face: A flat side of a solid figure Prism: A solid formed by three or more lateral faces that intersect with the bases Solid figure: A closed three-dimensional figure (cubes, spheres, cylinders, and pyramids are examples) Surface area: The area of the surfaces of a figure Do CORNELL NOTES!!!!
3
Surface Area Formulas Cube SA = 6s^2 Rectangular Prism SA = 2lw+ 2lh + 2wh Cylinder SA = 2(Pi)r2 + 2(Pi)rh Do CORNELL NOTES!!!!
4
Example 1: Cube SA = 6s^2 SA = 6(15in)^2 SA = 6(225in^2 ) SA =1,350in^2 15 in Do CORNELL NOTES!!!! 15 in
5
Example 2: Rectangular Solid SA = 2lw+ 2lh + 2wh SA = 2(5)(3)+ 2(5)(4)+ 2(3)(4) SA = 2(15)+ 2(20)+ 2(12) SA = 30 + 40 + 24 SA = 95units^2 Do CORNELL NOTES!!!! 4 5 3 Length=5 Width=3 Height=4
6
Example 3: Cylinder SA = 2(Pi)r2 + 2(Pi)rh SA = (6.28)r2 +(6.28)rh SA = (6.28)(4)2 +(6.28)(4)(7) SA = (6.28)(16)+(6.28)(28) SA =100.48+175.84 SA = 276.32units^2 Do CORNELL NOTES!!!! 8 7 Diameter=8 Radius=4 Height=7
