2. I. New Amsterdam  Henry Hudson was hired by the Dutch East India Company to search for new land – the Dutch called the northeast region New Netherland  Dutch purchased “Manhattes” from Native Americans and called the island New Amsterdam  With the help of Governor Peter Stuyvesant, New Amsterdam became very successful because of the harbors so that ships can trade, fur trade with Natives and the animals they brought from the Netherlands for food

5. II. New York  1644 – England wanted New Amsterdam and sent over soldiers and ships to take over the island from the Dutch – the Dutch gave up the colony  King James II gave the island to his brother, the Duke of York and the colony was renamed New York
