I took Distance Learning because: ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I wanted to learn about WWI and WWII. - I wanted to prepare for my SAT test. I am very interested in learning about the holocaust. - I wanted to continue on with French – I wanted to learn more about psychology. It covered two requirements needed to graduate. – I needed the credit. – I needed another science course. It was something different and I like history. – I wanted to learn from a different point of view. – I wanted a new learning environment. – It sounded interesting. I love poetry and was only available through distance learning. – It was the only way I could take sign language. – My AP class was offered through DL. – There was no other way for me to take philosophy. - My school dropped creative writing, DL was the only way I could take the course. I wanted to see what DL was like. – I was in DL before and I liked it. I wanted to continue with Spanish and get college credit. – I wanted a challenge and the college credit. – I wanted the credit for AP. Section C

The subject they wanted was only offered in DL. They were interested in the technology. They were interested in meeting new students. They needed that course. They wanted to try something new or different. They wanted a challenge, AP or college credit.

What did you like about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ We got to meet students from other schools and had great discussions. We got to learn from the other schools and share opinions. I met new people and learned a new learning technique. It was hands on, interesting and fun. – I liked the material and feel of the class. - It was a good environment with limited distractions. – It felt like a normal class. I love forensic science and the activities we did. – I enjoyed the projects and activities. - It was a good course. The technology was interesting. - It was like taking a college course. – I could not learn the subject anywhere else. – I liked the technology, doing tests and homework on line. I liked learning with the different types of alternate resources. – It was a different experience that offered a course that I would have been able to take otherwise. What didn’t you like about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Complications with technology. - Sometimes it was difficult to hear – Sometimes we didn’t get faxes. - Equipment didn’t always work. Not enough balanced attention.- The teacher ignored our school and frequently turned the microphone off so he could only talk to his students. - It was hard to get hold of the teacher. - The teacher didn't give the same amount of attention to our class as others. Work didn’t always get to us on time. – The teacher was very unorganized. Our class periods didn’t match up.- I didn’t like the different time schedules that each school was on. - I didn’t like not having class when other schools didn’t have school. Disruptive students or lack of discipline. Technical problems with audio or poor student/microphone positioning. Lack of interaction with or lack of attention from teacher or other students. Not dealing effectively with bell schedule or school calendar differences. * This year, the third most common response to this question was an indication that the student had nothing that they disliked.

What changes would you suggest for the Distance Learning classes? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Section C Fix audio issues. - Find a better, easier way to transport work. – Fax takes too long. - Don’t put microphones in the ceiling. – We need better more modern equip. Better planning between teachers to avoid missing days at each school when the other school doesn't have class. – More structure and more organization. – Get our test grades and marking period grades back to us on time. Coordinate and accommodate for the different bell schedules. Make it easier to talk with the teacher. - Teacher should pay more equal attention. We should be able to meet the other students. The teacher should have a day to meet the other school. Ban cell phones. – Don’t allow students that don’t want to communicate or who are not interested in the course.

Visits by teachers to remote classes and or combined class field trips. More balanced attention to classes by the teacher and better interaction. Technical improvements and better student/microphone/camera positioning. Teachers should use the system more effectively and be better organized. Better discipline, particularly re: loud talking, tapping and class disruptions. * This year, the most common response to this question was an indication that the student had no changes to suggest.

Our teacher scheduled after school sessions. Mr. Knaggs came to our school twice as well as brought us to Schalmont and Schalmont here. He worked the sound issues out and worked hard to teach to both classes. The teacher gave exceptions to deadlines and worked with students. She gave out her email and found ways to help. – Used Blackboard. Our teacher did everything she could. Always kept in touch with all the students in her class. Assignments given ahead of time, he was understanding and compromising and gave equal opportunity to his students. Section C
