Two Internal Sets of Body Cavities: Dorsal – Cranial and spinal cavity Ventral – Thoracic and Abdominopelvic cavity

Useful Terms: Viscera – The organs in the ventral cavity Pleural Cavities – Houses the lungs (part of ventral cavity) Mediastinum – Contains pericardial cavity Cardial or Cardiac = HEART!

Useful Terms: Mediastinum (cont) – Superior and Inferior – Superior houses esophagus, trachea, others Diaphragm – Muscle that separates thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities Pelvic Cavity – Houses bladder, reproductive organs, rectum – Tips into pelvis

Play Dough Cavities! On your torso models: You will mold: – Thoracic, Abdominal, Pelvic, Superior and Inferior Mediastinum, both Pleural, and Vertebral cavities. You will Label – Cranial cavity, Diaphragm, Ventral, Dorsal, and abdominopelvic cavities (in brackets) Color Matters!

Time to get Serous… Serous Membrane – AKA serosa – Covers walls of ventral cavity and outer surfaces of organs – Double-layered membrane

Two Parts: Parietal Serosa – Lines cavity walls Visceral Serosa – Covers organs Serous Fluid – Secreted by both membranes; lubricant
