Basic Subtraction An Overview
2
Definition Subtraction’s literal meaning is removing some objects from a group The meaning of 6-3=3 is – "Three objects are taken away from a group of six objects leaving only three objects remaining"
3
Subtraction Equations An equation is a mathematical statement such that the expression on the left side of the equals sign (=) has the same value as the expression on the right side. – For example an equation is 7 - 2 = 5
4
Subtraction with Larger Numbers Subtracting tens such as (60 - 20 = 40) is like subtracting quantities of items. In this case 2 tens are subtracted from 6 tens to leave 4 tens. Each digit of a number in our number system has a different place value. When subtracting numbers, always subtract in the same place value column. – For example: never subtract a one’s place value from a ten’s place value.
5
Subtracting Decimals Subtracting Decimals is just like subtracting other numbers. Always line up the decimal points when subtracting decimals. Remember to put the decimal point in the proper place in your answer.
6
Subtracting Money Often money is written as a decimal with dollars to the left of the decimal point and cents to the right of the decimal point. For example: Thirty-one dollars and six cents would be $31.06 Decimal money amounts are subtracted the same way that decimals are subtracted
