1 5 Minute Check 9/14/15 What is the name of the system of measurement used by scientists? Why is it important we all use the same system? What is Burkholder’s Picture Policy?

2 Taking Care of business
Friday we took our first test in here, If you passed the test with a 60% or higher you have the OPTION to redo the problems you got wrong BUT If you got a 59% or below you MUST redo your test by Wednesday or stay afterschool with me Wednesday. As well as you must have a parent sign your test Let’s go over how to redo tests in here On the back way I updated your grades so you can see what you are now getting in science with this test score in the computer

3 Today we are going to Learn about the basic unit for measuring length
THE Meter

4 Meters Meters are our base unit for measuring length or distance
The typical tool we use to measure is a meter stick ex. let’s see how to use one

5 Meters If I am measuring something really small like the length of an ant, does it make sense to use a meter stick?

6 Meters OR If I am measuring something really long like the distance from New York to Las Vegas, does it make sense to use a meter stick?

7 Meters The metric system is based on 10s so if we are measuring something smaller we break the meter stick into 10 equal parts (decimeter), and if we have to smaller we break that into 10 equal parts (centimeter), and if we have to go smaller we break that into 10 equal parts (millimeter)

8 Meters The metric system is based on 10s so if we are measuring something larger we put 10 meter sticks together to get Decameter. Then put 10 of them together to get a Hectometer. Finally put 10 of them together to get a kilometer.

9 Meters Let’s practice a way to remember all of these different units…
King Henry Died By Drinking Chocolate Milk

10 Let’s Watch a Short Video

11 Meters Now some of these you have heard of and have used, but honestly some of these we never really use. Let’s look at some that we use more often

12 Meters One centimeter is about the width of a large paper clip
or the thickness of your fingernail.

13 Meters One millimeter is about the thickness of your finger nail

14 Meters A meter is about the width of a doorway

15 Meters A kilometer is about six city blocks or 10 football fields.
1.6 kilometers is about 1 mile

17 Let’s start a metric poster in our notes
Length Base Unit: Meters Measurement Tool: Meter Stick Examples: mm-thickness of a pencil point cm-Width of your pinkie m-meter stick km-a little over a ½ mile   ____ ___l

18 What’s the appropriate tool to measure??
A car’s length The tip of a needle A football field A book A pencil point A pencil’s lenght

19 What’s the appropriate tool to measure??
Distance from Here to Target Height of your table A piece of paper’s length Bulletin board A penny’s thickness A penny's width

20 Converting Meters Now let’s talk about converting metrics
Let’s say you measured a book and it is 18cm long and you wanted to know how many mm that was, or how many meters that was. What we call this is converting units of measure Let’s do some of the board

21 Converting Units 10 cm = ___________mm 30mm = ___________cm
BUT WHAT IF WE HAVE DECIMALS???? Let me show you another way to use the saying and the staircase

22 Closing Why is it important to use an appropriate unit of measurement when giving measurements?

23 5 Minute Check 9/15/15 What is the saying to remember all the units of a meter. What is bigger a meter or centimeter? What is bigger a kilometer or a meter? Today’s Standard: 1.3 - The student will use SI units for measurement.

24 Taking Care of business
Remember if you did not pass the test on Friday you MUST get your parent to sign your test and you must redo the problems you got wrong by Wednesday or you have detention after school with me. If you passed your test but you want a better grade on your test you have till Friday to redo and turn into my basket.

25 Let’s watch a short video

26 Meters Let’s review King Henry Died By Drinking Chocolate Milk
Kilometer, Meter, Centimeter, Millimeter Converting units worksheet on the back of your metric poster

27 1 a.3.9 cm = ________ mm 1 b.10 dm = ________ m
   2 a.8.6 km = ________ hm 2 b.30 dm = ________ m 3 a.90 dm = ________ m 3 b.4 hm = ________ dm 4 a.170 dm = ________ dam 4 b.51 mm = ________ cm 5 a.26 hm = ________ km 5 b.54 hm = ________ km 6 a.3 cm = ________ mm 6 b.390 cm = ________ m 7 a.7 dam = ________ m 7 b.1 dam = ________ cm 8 a.9.8 hm = ________ dm 8 b.60,000 cm = ________ hm 9 a.9.6 dm = ________ cm 9 b.8 hm = ________ dm 10 a.400 m = ________ hm 10 b.6 dm = ________ mm

28 Today we are going to Learn about the basic unit for measuring mass
THE Gram

29 Grams Grams are our base unit for measuring mass The typical tool
we use to measure is a triple beam balance ex. let’s see how to use one

30 Grams A milligram weighs about as much as a grain of salt.

31 Grams 1 gram weighs about as much as a small paper clip or an m&m.
1 kilogram weighs about as much as 6 apples or 2 pounds.

32 Let’s review our poster
Mass Base Unit: Grams Measurement Tool: Triple Beam Balance Examples: mg-raindrop or an ant or a grain of salt cg-eraser on a pencil g-paper clip or m&m kg- a book like a dictionary _____   ____l ___l

33 Let’s review Let’s review the sizes of the unit meters
Now let’s compare that to the sizes of grams BIG DIFFERENCE!

34 Converting Now here’s the good part converting grams is the same as converting meters  1 a.61 cg = ______ g 1 b dg = ______ mg 2 a hg = ______ mg 2 b.91 cg = ______ g 3 a.8 cg = ______ dg 3 b.2,263 mg = ______ dag 4 a.1.23 dag = ______ mg 4 b.856 mg = ______ dag 5 a.5 hg = ______ kg 5 b g = ______ mg 6 a.1 dag = ______ hg 6 b.1.4 dag = ______ dg

35 Closing Give an example of something that has the mass of a g, mg, kg.

36 5 Minute Check 9/16/14 Give an example of something that is the length of a meter, cm, mm, km. Give an example of something that has the mass of a g, mg, kg. Today’s Standard: 1.3 - The student will use SI units for measurement.

37 Taking Care of business
If your redo test is not in my basket by the end of the school day I expect you here at my detention after school

38 Today we are going to Learn about the basic unit for measuring Volume
Liters

39 Liters Liters are our base unit for measuring Volume The typical tool
we use to measure is a graduated cylinder ex. let’s see how to use one

40 Liter 1 milliliter is about the amount of one drop

41 Liter 1 liter is half of a 2 liter bottle of Coke or other soda

42 Liter A kiloliter would be about 500 2-liter bottles of pop
Or the amount of water in a bath tub!

43 Capacity Estimation Let’s review what km, m, cm, mm look like
Let’s review what kg, g, mg

49 Closing What is the difference between a meter, liter and a gram?

50 5 Minute Check 9/17/15 When would we use each of the following systems of measurement: A. Meter B. Liter C. Gram Today’s Standard: 1.3 - The student will use SI units for measurement.
