Examples (almost everywhere you look!) A dove implies a connection to peace. Heart = love White = purity or goodness American flag = American freedom and democracy

While you read... you will often find symbols that the author has strategically placed to deepen the meaning of the text; this is called symbolism. What can symbols be? The symbols themselves can be objects, actions, and even the characters themselves become symbols – standing for good or evil, for instance. Regardless of the symbol and whether it is abstract or literal, symbolism adds another dimension to writing.
