1 The Power of Holy Spirit

2 I. Who is the Holy Spirit? Mark 1:10
Holy Spirit is God. He is the 3rd member of the Trinity – God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit then has attributes of deity. He is Omnipotent (all powerful). Luke 1:35, Romans 15:19 He is Omniscient (all knowing). John 14:26, I Corinthians 2:10, 11 He is Omnipresent (presence in all places at the same time). Psalm 139:7

3 I. Who is the Holy Spirit? Eternal (without beginning or end, lasting forever). Hebrews 9:14 Holy Spirit has a personality. He is as real in the Spirit as you are in the flesh. He has ears, eyes, mind and emotions. Holy Spirit has been active since the beginning of time. Genesis 1:2

4 I. Who is the Holy Spirit? I Samuel 10:10 Judges 14:6
2 Peter 1: for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

5 I. Who is the Holy Spirit? A Bit of History
Pentecost was and is one of the 3 major feasts in the nation of Israel. Jews throughout the Roman world traveled to Jerusalem 3 times a year to sacrifice and celebrate these feasts.

6 I. Who is the Holy Spirit? A Bit of History
Passover Feast – commemorated deliverance from Egyptian bondage. Pentecost – a feast always celebrated on the 50th day after Passover. Pente is the Greek word for 5. Koste indicates 10 times. 5x10 = 50. This feast celebrates God giving the Law to Moses on Mount Sinai 50 days after the exodus from Egypt (the Passover).

7 II. The Day of Pentecost Acts 2:1-4
“…they were all with one accord in one place.” Reveals a time, a place, and an attitude. They all heard a rushing mighty wind. They all saw “tongues of fire.”

8 II. The Day of Pentecost They all began to speak with other tongues.
Tongues in the Greek is glossa = glossary, means language.

9 III. Why did this supernatural event happen on this day?
Acts 2:5-13 120 people ‘suddenly’ begin speaking in various languages they had never known before. And thousands of people hear these individuals speaking in their own native languages. They were all amazed and perplexed. On the Day of Pentecost, God came down and removed languages as a barrier from knowing Him. (Note verse 11)

10 IV. What Pentecost Means to us today!
The Pentecost experience enables the believer to walk righteously. Jesus came to make us ‘righteous’ positionally (in right standing with God). Holy Spirit empowers us to live in a consistent way with our righteous position in Christ. You and I can’t walk righteously without the power of the Holy Spirit.

11 V. Holy Spirit changes everything!
Acts 1:8 Holy Spirit provides power! What kind of ‘power’? Power we can refer to a nation, it can refer to authority, to have control, it can mean strength, energy, force, ability.

12 V. Holy Spirit changes everything!
Power is 2 Greek words: Exousia (exertion) – this word has to do with the Power of Authority. Power that is conferred or given to someone by another. Matthew 10:1 Matthew 28:18 Dunamis (dynamite) – this word has to do with strength and ability. We need dunamis power of Holy Spirit to equip and enable us to do everything we do for the Lord.

13 V. Holy Spirit changes everything!
Difference of indwelling of Holy Spirit (salvation) and the baptism of Holy Spirit. John 20:22 Genesis 2:7 Ezekiel 37:9 Acts 1:8 Acts 2:1-4

14 VI. Power with Purpose Acts 1:8 – “…you will be my witnesses…”
The baptism in the Holy Spirit does not make me better than other believers who have not received this gift. The baptism in the Holy Spirit makes me a better me! Holy Spirit baptism transforms the believer.

15 VII. How can you receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit?
John 7:37-39 Come thirsty. Come to Jesus. Come to drink. Know that the gift is for you, believe it. Ask Jesus to fill you. Expect to speak in tongues. Don’t be afraid – step out in faith and receive.

16 Scriptures (NKJV)

17 Mark 1:10 10 And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove.

18 Luke 1:35 35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.

19 Romans 15:19 19 in mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God, so that from Jerusalem and round about to Illyricum I have fully preached the gospel of Christ.

20 John 14:26 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

21 I Corinthians 2:10, 11 10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.

22 Psalm 139:7 7 Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?

23 Hebrews 9:14 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

24 Genesis 1:2 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

25 1 Samuel 10:10 10 When they came there to the hill, there was a group of prophets to meet him; then the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.

26 Judges 14:6 6 And the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he tore the lion apart as one would have torn apart a young goat, though he had nothing in his hand. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done.

27 2 Peter 1:21 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

28 Acts 2:1-4 1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

29 Acts 2:5-13 5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. 7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born?

30 Acts 2:5-13 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.” 12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “Whatever could this mean?” 13 Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.”

31 Acts 1:8 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

32 Matthew 10:1 1 And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.

33 Matthew 28:18 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

34 John 20:22 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

35 Genesis 2:7 7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

36 Ezekiel 37:9 9 Also He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.”’”

37 Acts 1:8 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

38 Acts 2:1-4 1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

39 John 7:37-39 37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
