Choreography Strategies How to Design Your Dance
2
Start with Inspiration… Gestures- movement from everyday life; something familiar; very human movement Literary Material- a poem or short story; use movement to act out words or idea An Emotion- a feeling (sadness, anger, excitement, joy, loneliness, etc.) Make a Statement- tell your view or opinion about an issue that is important to you What else inspires you?
3
Modify the Movement Add a jump, hop, turn Change levels (add floorwork or lifts) Change directions Repetition (motif) Retrograde Cannon
4
Stage Your Dance Choose your pathways (straight, curved, diagonal, circular) Does where you dance make a statement? (centerstage, upstage corner, downstage, etc.) Relationships onstage ( close together, spread out, clusters, etc.)
5
Add Interest and Variety Create something new for our eye Layer your choreography (not all in unison!) Make sure your movement is thematic and will communicate your idea to the audience Add floor work, jumps, and partnering Do not include movement you see on TV in videos or at pep rallies! We want NEW ideas and fresh movement choices!
