Viruses (the Latin word for poison) Are viruses and bacteria similar? How are they different? Are viruses and bacteria similar? How are they different?  No – bacteria are living, viruses are not Why aren’t viruses included in the 6 kingdoms? Why aren’t viruses included in the 6 kingdoms?  No characteristics of living organisms on their own i.e. respiration, circulation, reproduction  A lifeless chemical outside a living cell

Viral anatomy DNA or RNA core surrounded by protein capsid DNA or RNA core surrounded by protein capsid Capsid: Capsid: –Protects the virus from the host cell’s enzymes that try to destroy it –Helps the virus attach to receptors on host cell’s membrane Use p.335 to label this diagram

Viruses are classified by: Viruses are classified by:  Their size & shape  The type of illness they cause Most viruses are selective and only infect certain hosts Most viruses are selective and only infect certain hosts  Some viruses are very specific and only infect one species Viruses can infect plants, animals and bacteria Viruses can infect plants, animals and bacteria Viruses that infect bacteria are called bacteriophages and are used to study properties of viruses Viruses that infect bacteria are called bacteriophages and are used to study properties of viruses

Reproduction = Replication Viruses can reproduce like other organisms but they need a host cell to accomplish this Viruses can reproduce like other organisms but they need a host cell to accomplish this The lytic cycle p.336 The lytic cycle p.336 1.Attachment (and entry) 2.Synthesis 3.Assembly 4.Release  Takes approx. 30 min, can produce 200+ new viruses

Task…. Use your text and the info from the YouTube videos to create a short flip book that illustrates the lytic cycle Use your text and the info from the YouTube videos to create a short flip book that illustrates the lytic cycle
