Naming Bonds
2
Ionic Naming Rewrite the name of the first symbol (metal). Write the beginning of the second symbol (non-metal). Add –ide as a suffix to the second name. Examples:
3
Covalent Naming Words are the same as ionic EXCEPT: Add prefixes for the number of atoms you have for each symbol. –mono = 1- hexa = 6 –di = 2- hepta = 7 –tri = 3- octa = 8 –tetra = 4- nona = 9 –penta = 5- deca = 10 Examples:
4
Polyatomic Ions When you see these combinations, do NOT change the name; simply write its name in the formula: –Hydroxide (OH) -1 –Ammonium (NH 4 ) +1 –Peroxide (O 2 ) -2 –Silicate (SiO 3 ) -2 Examples:
5
Transition Metals When you see a transition metal, you will add a roman numeral to the name of the metal. The roman numeral stands for the charge on the METAL. –I, II, III, IV, V Examples –Copper (II) chloride = CuCl 2 –Fe 2 O 3 = iron (III) oxide
6
Naming Acids and Bases Acids that H and O with another non- metal. –_____ic acid Nitric acid Acids that are H + a group 17 atom –Hydro ______ ic acid Hydrochloric acid Bases are simply named as usual. –NaOH –NaHCO 3
