VEHICLE INFORMATION

All vehicles must be titled, registered, and insured before they can be driven. Initial registrations for brand new cars last four years. All others last 1 year.

NJ residents must title and register each vehicle within 60 days of moving into NJ. To title new car: Obtain title from dealership. To title used car: Fill in back of title with buyer’s name, address and signature, date of sale, and odometer reading and sale price.

Complete application at Motor Vehicle Show proof of ownership Show proof sales tax has been paid. Must be 17 years old or older to register a car.

Can be transferred to a new vehicle. Cannot be transferred to a new owner. ATTACH TO FRONT BUMPER AND REAR OF VEHICLE

HANDICAP – free to disabled persons Must register with MVC and have form completed by a physician. QQ license plates are for historic vehicles that are 25 years old or older and are not driven more then 3,000 miles a year.

For cars made after 2000, you do not need to inspect it for 5 years if bought new. Inspect it every 2 years after that. YOU MUST INSPECT YOUR CAR WITHIN 14 DAYS OF Registering your car after you moved in NJ. If you fail inspection, you have till the end of the next month to make necessary repairs and get it re- inspected.

LIABILITY INSURANCE IS MANDATORY IN NJ!!! Must show insurance card before inspection, at accident scene, and if stopped for a traffic violation

4. Car Manufacturer Reputation How could you find out if the car you are buying has a good reputation (from problems or defects)? Which car companies are better than others and why? (Toyota vs. Ford. Mitsubishi, etc.)

5. Other Car Features What else is important to you when buying a car? Safety Features Luxury Depreciation Value Possible Upgrades (On-star, GPS, etc)

6. WHO IS PAYING FOR…. The Car? The Car Insurance? ($2000-$3000 per year) The Gas? ($30 per week) Any Tickets You Get or Repairs You Need?
