Warm-up: 1. What are three main concepts/tenants of realism? 2. Examine the painting on this slide. In complete sentences, describe what you see in the setting or characters that classify this work as realist art.

Portfolio piece “grace period” ends Thursday. Bring me assignments to sign after class. Make sure “Realism”’ notes are finished. Continue to research for your persuasive essay! Next week, we will start/finish writing the essay, so you need at least 10-15 fact-based flashcards that you can actually use in your essay by next week! Period 3: Warm-ups due after class.

Turn to page 944 and let’s read the background information about Guy de Maupassant and “A Piece of String”.

Friend, beware of the dog that bites. Beware of the drink which will take away your prudence and leave you on the edge. Let’s continue reading “The Piece of String”. As we read, complete 3 different bubble-charts: 1. Details about setting 2. Details about the peasants and their lives 3. Details about the main characters. Include quotes, factual details that the author gives to help us picture the people/setting more (not your interpretation from the details)
