2
Using the Rainforest LO: To explain why rainforests are being exploited and the effect this has Basic - describe two causes of deforestation and some effects Good - describe a range of causes of deforestation and explain the effects at different scales Excellent - explain the causes of deforestation and the local, national and global effects (some of which are positive)
3
How much is being destroyed? Describe what has happened to the Amazon Rainforest over the past 20 years. Include the trend, the rate and actual numbers in your answer Amazonia

Do they harm the rainforest when they use it? Paper Mills Saw mills Rubber Tappers Mining Companies Medical companies Loggers Hydro electricity companies Perfume companies Small scale farmers

Why is the rainforest being cut down?

Deforestation: the destruction of an ecosystem You are going to research and write a report on deforestation. You need to work alone to decide what is going to go into your report. You will need to collect information about the causes and effects of deforestation. The report should include two sections but you should also have an introduction that explains what is happening and a conclusion that sums up your findings and you own opinion. Section 1. Why is the rain forest being cut down? In this section you need to explain what the different pressures are on the rainforest. Who is cutting it down or allowing it to be cut down and why? Section 2. What are the effects of deforestation? In this section you need to explain how cutting down the rainforest is affecting the local area where the trees are cut down, the people of the area like the Tikuna people, the rest of Brazil and the world climate.

Effects of Deforestation
11
Deforestation: the destruction of an ecosystem. Mark Scheme Basic An introduction that describes what is happening in the Amazon Short simple statements describe give reasons why the rainforest is being cut down e.g. the trees are cut down to be sold for money Some clear effects of deforestation mainly focussed on the local area Good A balanced report that shows why the rainforest is being used and what the effects of this are. Developed points that use “so” to extend their explanations Evidence (graphs, maps, charts, photos etc.) are used (and written about) to make points and key terms are used correctly. A conclusion that says what you think should happen in the future. Excellent A well written report that discusses the causes and effects in detail with facts/data used as evidence Clear understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of deforestation for Amazonia, Brazil and the planet. Discussion of how sustainable the deforestation is and why. Evidence of additional research undertaken by the student.

Any of these look familiar?

Good Stuff A.Great use of key terms B.you have told me what your creature is like C.You have described your creature in detail e.g. size / noise D.You have described your creatures lifestyle clearly E.You have described how and where in the trf it lives F.you have drawn a clear diagram that adds to your description G.you have described how some of your adaptations help your creatures survive H.You have explained how some of your adaptations enable your creature to survive I.you have explained how your creature copes with the climate J.You have linked your adaptations to the layer your animal lives in K. you have created your own adaptations L.you have linked points together e.g. why doesn’t your animal need to be defensive if it is a predator M.You have used a wide range of appropriate terminology.
14
Target 1.Use key terms 2.Say what things are like 3.Describe in detail e.g. size / sound / climate 4.Describe lifestyles clearly 5.Describe how and where things / people lives 6.Draw and label clear diagrams 7.Describe how features of a place or lifestyle help people/plants/things survive 8.Explain how species survive due to their adaptations 9.Explain how species / people cope with climates 10.Link adaptations / lifestyles to a species’ surroundings 11.Come up with your own ideas / inventions 12.Link points together - Point Evidence Explanation 13.Use a wide range of appropriate terminology.
