Types of Natural Hazards Volcanoes, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, tsunamis, etc. –can occur: without warning (e.g. earthquakes) with warnings (e.g. satellite monitoring of cyclone tracks, or the presence of ground deformation at a volcano before an eruption)
7
Earthquake Hazards These are important hazards to understand: –the natural hazard that on average kills the highest number of people per year ( 1 million during the past century) –commonly strikes without warning –no time for evacuation –not a predictable trend to earthquake numbers, magnitude or location 1000's of large earthquakes every year

Powerful waves have hit the coast of Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures where dozens of communities suffered. Kyodo news agency informed that 10 meter wave hit Sendai port in Miyagi prefecture. Tornado Quiz.

Tornadoes are also known as "twisters." They extend downward from the huge clouds of a severe thunderstorm. The winds that rotate within a tornado usually reach a speed of almost 400 miles per hour! A tornado often sweeps through an area quickly, but it can cause considerable destruction. There have been a number of remarkable reports of tornadoes. In one instance, a schoolhouse was demolished while the 85 students originally inside it were carried more than 400 feet with none killed. There was also a case of five railway coaches, each weighing 70 tons, lifted from their tracks.
