2 Round/Dynamic characters A major character in a work of fiction Encounters conflict and is changed by it Round characters tend to be more fully developed and described than flat/static characters. Seem like real people because they change due to circumstances just like real people Round things are much more complex than flat things. They take more time to build and study. They change directions.

3 Flat/Static Characters Are minor characters in a work of fiction Do not undergo substantial change or growth in the course of a story Serve the purpose usually of humor Circumstances and events do not seem to change or develop them Flat things don’t require much time to build or study. They don’t change direction and are quite simple.

5 Examples What is Marlin and Dori in Finding Nemo? Why? Discuss with Face partner. What about Crush the turtle in Finding Nemo? Why? Discuss with Face Partner.

6 Your turn Now classify the characters of The Hobbit as either flat/static characters or round/dynamic characters Ask yourself: 1. Does this character change at all in the novel? 2. How? 3. Why? Does he go through something that causes him to act differently or perceive others differently? 4. Does the character stay the same throughout the novel?
