Stephen King writes, "I get paid to show people different perspectives. It's like exercising a muscle, rather than letting it go slack I have not skill that improves the quality of life in a physical sense at all. The only thing I can do is say: 'Look here, this is the way you didn't look at it before. It's just a cloud to you, but look at it, doesn't it look like an elephant?' Somebody says: 'Boy! it does look like an elephant!' And for that, people pay because they've lost all of it themselves."

Assonance: repetition of similar vowel sounds followed by different consonant sounds
rabbit and whacked
purple and curtain
Consonance: repetition of consonants in middle or at end of words
pitter and patter
Alliteration is consonance at the beginning of words!

Onomatopoeia: word whose sound imitates or suggests its meaning
Crackle, fizz, pop, click, zoom
Pun: plays on multiple meanings of a word OR on two homophones or words that sound alike; humorous
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
Santa’s helpers are subordinate clauses.

4. Poetry Term Free Verse: poem without particular meter or rhyme scheme
Until mid-1800s, all poems in English were written in strict forms of meter
Poets began to “rebel” and experiment
Free verse sounds more like everyday spoken language—but poets pay close attention to pauses (punctuation) and balance between short/long phrases.
