2 Completion  Leave off a word at the end of the sentence and let children fill it in  Example: Run, run, as fast as you can. You can’t catch me. I’m the Gingerbread _____.

3 Open Ended  Ask a question that will enable children to think of several different answers  Example: What do you think the Gingerbread Man is doing in this picture:  Example: How would you feel if you were the Gingerbread Man?

4 Who, What, Where, Why & How?  Ask these kind of questions about the story and the pictures  Example: What did the baker use to make the Gingerbread Man?  Example: How did the fox trick the Gingerbread Man?

5 Connections Connections  Help the children see how the story relates to something familiar  Example: Have any of you ever eaten gingerbread?  Example: Did anyone ever try to trick you?

6 Strategies for Reading Stories to Children  Carefully select books for reading aloud  Practice, practice, practice!  Transition into story time  Set the stage for story time  Use expression while reading  Take your time as you read  Show the pictures
