4  Criticism is a valuable means of helping ourselves and others achieve personal growth. However, because it is often done carelessly, criticism has a bad reputation. Here are some guidelines for offering criticism constructively. First, wait until the person asks for feedback. Second, describe the person’s behavior specifically. And finally, try to balance your criticism with positive statements.

5  Although alcohol can cause rapid poisoning, frequently leads to long term addiction, and always threatens self- control, US society encourages drinking. By their example, many parents give children like Tod the impression that alcohol is an essential ingredient of social gatherings. Peer pressure turns bachelor parties, fraternity initiations, and spring break into competitions in “getting trashed.” In movies, trendsetters party. The worst culprit is advertising. Alcohol ads appear with frequency. It is no surprise that so many young people report abusing alcohol.

6  REMEMBER:  Look for key words (several, many types of, etc.)  Main ideas are more general  The main idea should involve the topic  It’s an umbrella statement! It should go above all other statements.

7  Try your best.  No phones.  Turn in when finished, and read your SSR book or work on other work.  This is a test! Not all of the main ideas will be the first sentence because it is a test. Read the full paragraph and use the tips.  TIPS:  Look for key words (several, many types of, etc.)  Main ideas are more general  The main idea should involve the topic
