Anticipation / Reaction Assess prior knowledge of class and individual students before beginning unit of study (pre-test) Identify misconceptions and possible stereotypes Set of questions focus on Big Idea Used as an assessment tool at the end of unit: Has the students' thinking changed? Was there new learning? Provide opportunity for processing learning

Exploration Report Teaches scientific process with pictures, realia, or experiments Promotes scientific inquiry Used for categorizing and classifying For older students, note difference between observations and inferences

Guess My Category A scaffold for comprehension of concept / Big Idea being taught Extensions: use this strategy for teaching word families, vocabulary for specific content areas which can be categorized

Chants Reinforces oral and aural language patterning and repetition for reading fluency (brain imprinting) For ELs, allows use/practice of academic vocabulary/concepts in a low affective format Teaches rhythm, chord, beat, pronunciation, and phonemic awareness of the English language
