 Amelia Earhart –  In 1932, she was the first to make a solo transatlantic flight.  She landed in Ireland  It took her 20 hours and 40 minutes  She disappeared in the Pacific in 1937 while trying to fly around the world. Pioneers Contribute to the Development of Air Power

 In the 1920s, small companies were formed to build private aircraft.  The earliest was the Travel Air Manufacturing Company in 1925 in Wichita, Kansas.  The company was formed by Lloyd Stearman, Clyde Cessna, and Walter Beech.  Within the next few years, all three men broke away from Travel Air Manufacturing and started their own companies. Aviation Grows General Aviation

Travel Air offered its customers a choice of almost twenty different engines and a variety of wing. Designs. The Travel Air 6000 included a toilet/washroom, luxurious interior, wide windows, and updated instrumentation among its amenities, all for a cost of $13,000-13,500.

 Taylor started his company – Taylor Aircraft Company. Aviation Grows

 In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson formed the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA).  It directed scientific study of the problems of flight and provided valuable research in aeronautics. Aviation Grows

 In 1926, Daniel Guggenheim founded the School of Aeronautics in New York University.  Established fund that provided many colleges and universities with money for private flying clubs. Aviation Grows

 In 1929, James Doolittle performed the first successful “blind” take-off and landing.  Aim was to make flying at night and in bad or inclement weather safer.  He took off – flew 5 miles, made a 180 turn and landed safely  Paved the way for flight and navigation instruments and 2- way radios to be installed in aircraft Aviation Grows

 Autogiros led to the further development of helicopters  During the 1920s and 1930s, helicopters made several advances as well. Aviation Grows
