Causes of the War Spanish Empire was weak Good opportunity for the U.S. to prove itself against a weak foe. U.S. media drums up support for a war. Unsubstantiated reports of Spanish atrocities against Cubans reported in U.S. newspapers.

“Yellow Journalism” Two competing NY newspaper publishers compete for readers. William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer “Yellow Journalism” Sensational reporting designed to increase readership. War = more readers = more money.

“Remember the Maine” USS Maine blows up in Havana harbor. U.S. media immediately blames explosion on the Spanish. Provides justification for U.S. to declare war on Spain (1898).

The War in Cuba U.S. easily defeats the Spanish army and navy in Cuba. Buffalo Soldiers African-American soldiers who fight separately from whites. Rough Riders Adventurers led by Theodore Roosevelt (who had resigned his post in the Naval Department).
