2 Temperance Movement Temperance = moderation A movement to reduce or eliminate the amount of alcohol consumption in America (remember Carry Nation?!) 1. Men drank irresponsibly 2. Religious groups said it was unholy and socially immoral 3. Wanted to lower crime rates 4. Needed to conserve grain for WWI

3 Eighteenth Amendment Became law in 1920 Establishes prohibition
Prohibition = outlawing drinking Illegal to sell liquor anywhere in the US

4 Speakeasies Illegal bars where alcohol was sold

5 Bootleggers People who illegally sold alcohol
Moonshine became a popular homemade alcoholic beverage

6 Organized Crime Became a huge money making business
Crime INCREASED in the US

7 Twenty-First Amendment
Passed in 1933 Repealed (got rid of) the 18th amendment Alcohol sales are NO longer illegal
