2. New Netherland A colony started by the Dutch in 1621.
To encourage immigration, the Dutch gave large grants of land to people who bring at least 50 settlers to work it. This was called the patroon system.
It was diverse, with people with different beliefs moving in from many countries.

3. Peter Stuyvesant was governor when the English took control in 1664.

4. New York
The English controlled New England and Virginia in Between them was New Netherland.
The English captured New Netherland in 1664.
King Charles II gave this proprietary colony to his brother, the Duke of York, who renamed it New York.

The Duke of York gave the southern part of his colony to friends, who named this area of land New Jersey.
