Purposes To maintain international peace and security To develop friendly relations among nations To achieve international cooperation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character Promote respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms

Membership Membership in the United Nations is open to all peace-loving states which accept the obligations contained in the United Nations Charter. Membership is decided by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council.

General Assembly Is made up of all member nations. Each member has one vote Decisions of the General Assembly on important issues shall be made by a two- thirds majority of the members present and voting.

General Assembly Vote on: recommendations to the maintenance of international peace and security, the election of non-permanent members of the Security Council, the elections of the members of the Economic and Social Council, suspensions of the rights and privileges of membership, the expulsion of members, and the budget.

Security Council Is made up of 15 members of the United Nations. China, France, Russia, Great Britain, and the United States are permanent members. General Assembly elects ten other members of the United Nations to be non-permanent members of the Security Council.

Security Council Each member has one vote. Decisions shall be made by an affirmative vote of nine members. May investigate any dispute, or any situation which might lead to a conflict. It will determine the existence of any threat to the peace or act of aggression and make recommendations.

Sanctions The Security Council may decide what measures may be used to enforce its decision. These include: complete or partial interruption of economic relations and communication and the severance of diplomatic relations.

Sanctions If these sanctions are proven inadequate, the Security Council can order demonstrations, blockades, and other operations by air, sea, or land.

Sanctions All members of the United Nations agree to make available armed forces, assistance, and facilities necessary for the purpose of maintaining international peace and security.

Military Staff Committee Advises and assists the Security Council on all questions relating to the Security Council on issues related to the employment and command of forces. It consists of the Chiefs of Staff to the permanent members of the Security Council.

Military Staff Committee Is responsible under the Security Council for the direction of any armed forces.

Self-Defense Nothing in the United Nations Charter takes away the right of an individual or collective self-defense if an armed attack occurs against a Member nation, until the Security Council takes measures necessary to maintain international peace and security.

International Economic and Social Cooperation The United Nations shall promote: 1. higher standards of living and full employment. 2. Solutions of international economic, social, health, and related problems. 3. Universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion.

Economic and Social Council Is made up of 54 members and elected by the General Assembly. It make or initiate studies and reports with respect to international economic, social, cultural, educational, health, and related matters and make recommendations to the General Assembly.

Secretary-General Is appointed by the General Assembly and recommended by the Security Council. He is the chief administrator officer of the United Nations.
