More Than Ten Ones Objectives: We will solve addition problems with 2-digit numbers using strategies that involve breaking numbers apart by place or adding one number in parts. We will solve addition problems with 2-digit numbers that involve more than 10 ones in the ones place and explaining the effect on the sum.

ReviewReview What is an equation? Give an example. Esha had 67 stickers. She gave Mr. Spriha 33 stickers. How many stickers does Esha have now? *Write the equation and solve this using two strategies! (ie. Traditional, place value blocks, adding by place)*

Approaching a Problem The problem: Ari had 63 baseball cards. His mother gave him her collection of 26 cards. How many baseball cards does he have now? How many cards did Ari have to start? How many more did his mother give him? What equation can we write to represent this problem? Take 2 minutes to solve the problem with a partner… Do it on a sticky note!

What strategies did you use? Here’s a great strategy… Adding by Place Strategy Here’s a great strategy… Adding by Place Strategy Adding by Place Strategy. Example: 63 + 26 = ? 60 + 20 = 80 3 + 6 = 9 3 + 6 = 9 80 + 9 = 89 50 6055 But… I don’t know if you’re ready for this awesomeness.

Try this problem on your own using the adding by place strategy! 56 + 78 = ______________

What strategies did you use? Here’s another great strategy… Adding one Number in parts Strategy Here’s another great strategy… Adding one Number in parts Strategy Adding One Number in Parts. Example: 63 + 26 = ? 63 + 10 = 73 73 + 10 = 83 83 + 6 = 89 50 6055 Wait for it…...............

Solve this problem on your own using the break apart one number strategy! 45 + 39 = ____________

Vertical Equation 50 605553 This is what the equation looks like vertically. Remember, you can use this strategy but you must know other strategies as well! 63 + 26 89

Try a Number Line (in the free space below!) 56 + 24 50 6055

Guided Practice Solve this problem: Solve this problem: Vanessa went to Sticker Station and bought 6 strips of 10 and 3 single star stickers, and 2 strips of 10 and 9 single moon stickers. How many stickers did Vanessa buy in all? You must use 2 of the strategies below to solve: You must use 2 of the strategies below to solve: Adding by place, adding one number in parts, or number line. 50 6055

Model It… Please (pictures) 50 6055 63 + 26 = 89 63 + 29 = 92
