Missouri’s State Symbols Created by Mrs. Routh’s Class 2008-2009

The State Seal n The state seal was approved January 11, 1822. n The symbols all have a special meaning. n The seal is used on important government papers. By Nathan

State Animal by Aron n On May 31, 1995 the mule was chosen to be the state animal. n It is known as a strong animal. n For many years, Missouri was the state that raised the most mules.

State Flag by Samuel n The flag was made by Marie Elizabeth Oliver. n It was approved as a state symbol on March 22, 1913. n The state seal is in the middle of the flag.

The State Mineral The State Mineral n This mineral was named on July 21, 1967. n It is dark in color. n It is mined in many different countries. n The mineral’s name is Galena. By ; Hope

State Tree By Kelsie n The Dogwood tree became our state tree on June 20, 1955. n In the spring the tree blooms pink or white flowers. n In the fall the tree grows red fruit.

State dinosaur By Jacob n The Hypsibema missouriense is a "duck-billed" dinosaur. n It became the official dinosaur on July 9, 2004. n It ate plants and had over 1,000 teeth.

The State Nut By: Katie n The eastern black walnut was named the state nut of Missouri in July, 9,1990. n The nut is often used in ice cream. n You can make candy. n The shell of the nut is used for painting.

State Amphibian By: Jaden n The American Bullfrog became the state amphibian in June 5, 2005. n It is the largest frog native to Missouri. n The idea for the symbol came from a 4 th grade class in Chinn Elementary in Kansas City.

State Instrument n The fiddle was made the state instrument on July 17, 1987. n In the late 1700’s the fiddle was the only music source in many cities. n A fiddle also is called a violin. by Tai by Tai

State flower n The state flower is called White Hawthorn Blossom. n It was made the state flower on March 16, 1923. n It is most commonly found on hawthorn trees in southern Missouri. By Isaac

State American Folk Dance by: Sarah n The square dance became a symbol on May 31,1995. n The dancers always told their partner what steps to do. n They memorized their partners steps and not theirs. n They always loved the steps they did. n They didn’t care if would mess up they would get up and try again. n They would wear fancy clothes. n They would always wear hats or never wear hats. n The boys would wear shorts or pants.

State Horse by Hayden n The Missouri fox trotting horse was chosen as the state horse on June 4, 2002. n They are raised in the Ozark hills. n They are known for the special way they can walk and trot.

State fossil n The crinoid was named the state fossil on June 16, 1989. n The fossil comes from the remains of sea lilies. n The sea lilies lived in the ocean that covered Missouri at one time. By Tanner

State Insect By: Brionna n The Honeybee was named the state insect on July 3,1985. n It has two main jobs, like pollinating flowers and making honey. n The Honeybee is black and yellow.

State rock n Mozarkite was named Missouri's state rock on July 21, 1967. n It can be green, red, or purple. n It is commonly used to make jewelry. n Mozarkite can be found in southern Missouri. By: Emma

State aquatic animal n The Paddlefish was named the state aquatic animal on May 23,1997. n They can live up to 30 years old. n The paddle fish usually grows to be over 5 feet long and weighs more then 60 pounds. By Jacqueline

The State Grape By Emily n The Norton/Cynthiana grape became the state grape July 11, 2003. n They have been around since the 1830s. n The state grape has been very popular in Missouri because of their hardy growth.
