Summer Research Experiences Have become more popular with the students Students participate after their freshman year Students work with engineering faculty and graduate students Students receiving tech elective credit Creates an interest and awareness regarding research earlier in students academic career

Selection of Research Projects Done by host school – Provide list and description for students to apply to – Typically a limited number Students submit application for project – Projects initially reviewed by UIUC faculty Final Credit Determined Upon Completion of Program – Final report reviewed by faculty upon return – Hours spent on project submitted by host school – Research project included on transcript

Ambiguity Students do not know for sure they will receive tech credit when they go Why do they go??? – The chance to gain research experience when they can’t at home – Doing research at a premier institution while… – Gaining language and culture experience
