3 Is Social Networking taking up too much of your time?  An increasing problem in today’s society is addiction to the internet, particularly in relation to social networking websites. The main culprit is a well known website called Facebook.  Other Social Networking sites include: MySpace, Twitter, Digg, but Facebook has by far the largest user-base.  I will refer to Facebook, due to it’s large user-base.

4 Why do people turn to Facebook?  We are overwhelmed by constant exponentially increasing technology and find it hard to keep up – sites like Facebook simplify all this and we get a sense of enlightenment.  “Some have compared it to “The Truman Show” – a fabricated world where nothing ever goes wrong. A fun, pleasant, happy, beautiful world where people only present the crème de la crème of their lives – these people want to be your friends! It’s very seductive.”

5 To be diagnosed with Facebook Addiction Disorder (FAD) you must meet at least 2 of the following 6 criteria at any time during a 6-8 month period: 1. The need for increasing amounts of time on Facebook to achieve satisfaction. Having more than 3 Facebook windows open at the same time is not a good sign. 2. When you don’t have access to Facebook, you get distressed and anxious from wondering what people are writing on your wall. 3. Important social/recreational activities are reduced and/or migrated to Facebook. 4. Virtual dating through Facebook, meeting up on Farmville etc for a date. 5. At least 25% of people in your friends list are people you don’t know. 6. When you meet people you introduce yourself by saying “see you on Facebook” or you give your dog a Facebook profile. I could be addicted.. How can I be sure?

6 I’m addicted! Can anyone help? A former Facebook addict wrote an article on how he broke free from his Facebook addiction. This article has been a great help to many Facebook addicts. Here’s the basic steps: 1. Admit that you have a problem. 2. Write down how much time you spend on Facebook. 3. Give yourself a set time of the day to visit Facebook. 4. Turn off email notifications. 5. Meditate as soon as the thought arises. 6. Get off the computer. 7. Write down what you used to do before Facebook. 8. Block Facebook. 7 So, in conclusion..  Social Networking Websites user-bases are growing exponentially, especially Facebook’s.  This is due to many different factors such as rapidly increasing technology and Facebook being an attractive virtual world.  If you’re addicted, there is help available. Start by admitting you have a problem, and try to limit your time on Facebook.  Ensure that you do not use Facebook like this guy here.
