Electrical Appliances – Switch off and disconnect electrical appliances when they are not in use. Switch off the electric current before removing any plugs from the wall socket or putting a plug into a socket. Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 3, Topic 3

What should I not do? - Do not work with wet hands. - Do not handle electricity with bare feet. - Do not use electric wires when the insulation is broken or damaged. - Avoid knots in the electric wire or leads. Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 3, Topic 3

Golden rule: we must respect electricity. Electric shock can affect your entire body - it can even paralyse or kill you. You can be shocked from anything that is plugged into the mains. Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 3, Topic 3

What to do if someone has suffered an electrical shock
1. Do not touch the person until you are sure that they are not in contact with the electrical source, because the electrical current could pass through you too if the electrical source is not switched off. 2. Turn off the source of electricity if possible or move the source of electricity away from the injured person with a well-insulated object e.g. a wooden broom handle. What to do if someone has suffered an electrical shock
3. Check for signs of breathing or movement. 4. Do not move the person unless they are in danger. 5. Call the ambulance and say that the person has had an electrical shock. Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 3, Topic 3
