British India During the 1600’s Great Britain started to ruled over Indian society and economy. India therefore, became a British colony. What is a Colony? a country or area controlled politically by a more powerful country that is often far away. Effect of colonialism in India Extraction economy – which riches were extracted, or taken from the colonies to benefit the empire. Destroyed Indian factories in order to expand their own industries. This cause periods of famine and claimed millions of lives. Low expectancy and high rate of infant mortality. Dependency

Mahatma Gandhi Indian lawyer that study in London and worked in South Africa. Experience racism and went back to India and began his work in civil rights. In India he led the fight for India’s independence from British empire. He organized non-violent civil disobedience campaigns. Went to jails a few times for organizing protest. There he will often fast (not eat). Eventually the British released him. He transformed the Indian National Congress into a movement of masses against British rule.
