A Tax on Tea Due to the tension following the Boston Massacre, Parliament repealed the Townsend Acts but kept a tax on tea. Why? To show that it still claimed the right to tax the colonists.

The Tea Act Much of the tea in the colonies was smuggled in
East India Company asked Parliament for permission to directly sell to the colonies Low prices would convince colonists to buy their tea, increasing the tax revenue and helping E.I.C. pay off debt

Tea Act Continued… Passed in 1773
Opposed by many smugglers and merchants Afraid E.I.C. would put them out of business Others feared E.I.C. gained a monopoly on the tea trade. End result: Colonists opposed the Act

Sons of Liberty demands Thomas Hutchinson – governor of Mass Ordered that they unload tea December 16, 1773 colonists disguised as Indians crept onto the three ships, dumping 90,000 pounds of tea into the Boston Harbor!
