2 The Thirteen colonies… ► In terms of being "ready" for independence, colonies were □ 'ed away:  We had a tradition of local self-government  Fairly prosperous economy  Growing population with plenty of "empty" space

3 Colonial dissatisfaction… ► Britain tried to preserve the mercantile relationship through the Navigation Acts in the 1660s  Colonies had to sell to Britain only ► Sold raw materials ► Bought finished goods  Colonies paid high taxes for non-British products ► Bottom Line:  Great Britain was profiting from the relationship at the colonies' expense

4 Stamp Act ► 1763 French & Indian War ends in British victory ► 1765 Parliament passes the Stamp Act  Make colonies help pay for war costs  Colonists protest "taxation without representation" ► boycott of British products

5 Oh, dear… ► 1766 Stamp Act repealed ► 1773 "Boston Tea Party"  Led by Sam Adams  British close port of Boston, occupy city with troops ► Sept 1774 First Continental Congress  Meet in Philly  Protest Boston's treatment
