Joining similar ideas and adding information We use and to join similar ideas and add information. We use and, not a comma, to join only two words or ideas. e.g. I bought a hat and a tie.

Joining similar ideas and adding information We use commas when there are three or more things, but don’t use a comma in front of and. e.g. I buy a hat, a tie and a coat. I buy a hat and a tie, and a coat. See “or”

A. Showing choices We use or to give someone a choice. He hasn’t got a sister or a brother. He can’t read or write. She doesn’t smoke or drink. e.g. For dinner you can have rice or congee. B. Use after a negative

but We use but to link up contrasting ideas. I like strawberries but I don’t like oranges. I like strawberries. I don’t like oranges.
