UNITED NATIONS
2
The name "United Nations", coined by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt was first used in the Declaration by United Nations of 1 January 1942, during Second World War. The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. It is currently made up of 193 Member States. The mission and work of the United Nations are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter. Each of the 193 Member States of the United Nations is a member of the General Assembly.

The main organs of the UN are: THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY THE SECURITY COUNCIL THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL THE TRUSTEESHIP COUNCIL THE INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE THE UN SECRETARIAT All were established in 1945 when the UN was founded.
4
The Secretary-General of the United Nations is a symbol of the Organization's ideals and a spokesman for the interests of the world's peoples, in particular the poor and vulnerable. The current Secretary-General of the UN, and the eighth occupant of the post, is Mr. Ban Ki-moon of the Republic of Korea. The UN Charter describes the Secretary-General as "chief administrative officer" of the Organization.
5
Funds, Programmes, Specialized Agencies and Others The UN system, also known unofficially as the "UN family", is made up of the UN itself and many affiliated programmes, funds, and specialized agencies, all with their own membership, leadership, and budget. The programmes and funds are financed through voluntary rather than assessed contributions. The Specialized Agencies are independent international organizations funded by both voluntary and assessed contributions.
6
The logo and flag of the UN have become its symbols as it carries out its work on the world stage. They have the practical effect of identifying the United Nations in areas of trouble and conflict to any and all parties concerned. They are also aspirational symbols, for they speak to the hopes and dreams of people the world over, for peace and unity.
7
The Design The original UN logo was created by a team of designers in 1945. Its Use The UN logo has been incorporated into the logos of several UN Family members. The logo is also used on United Nations stamps. A Map of the World A Map of the World The design is "a map of the world representing an azimuthal equidistant projection centred on the North Pole, inscribed in a wreath consisting of crossed conventionalized branches of the olive tree, in gold on a field of smoke-blue with all water areas in white. The projection of the map extends to 60 degrees south latitude, and includes five concentric circles". Approval The UN logo was approved on 7 December 1946.

There are six official languages of the UN. These are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. The correct interpretation and translation of these six languages, in both spoken and written form, is very important to the work of the Organization, because this enables clear and concise communication on issues of global importance.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is an agency of the UN that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. The organization represents 187 member countries plus the European Union. FAO acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy. FAO is also a source of knowledge and information, and helps developing countries and countries in transition modernize and improve agricolture, foresty and fisheries practices, ensuring good nutrition and food security for all.
15
FAO creates and shares critical information about food, agriculture and natural resources in the form of global public goods. But this is not a one-way flow. It plays a connector role, through identifying and working with different partners with established expertise, and facilitating a dialogue between those who have the knowledge and those who need it. By turning knowledge into action, FAO links the field to national, regional and global initiatives in a mutually reinforcing cycle. By joining forces, it facilitates partnerships for food and nutrition security, agriculture and rural development between governments, development partners, civil society and the private sector.
22
FAO Structure The 49-member FAO council meets between conference sessions to monitor the world food situation and suggest necessary action. The council's committees deal with problems on agriculture, commodities, forestry, and fisheries. The third organ, the secretariat, is responsible for implementing FAO programs. Main headquarters is in Rome, Italy.” It is headed by a director general. Each member nation has one vote in the general conference, the policymaking body that convenes once every two years to approve programs, budgets, and rules of procedure.
